Advances, Clawback Recovery, and Payroll That Fixes Itself

Last updated: September 2026

In July I wrote about the half of an MCA shop most software ignores: splits, PSF, payouts, payroll, defaults and clawbacks, all on the deal that created them. Three things shipped since then, and each one came from a shop running FUNDesk asking for it.

Advance a rep before the lender pays

A rep closes a deal on the 3rd and the lender pays on the 20th. Some shops advance the rep. FUNDesk now tracks that as a ledger on the rep, with the deal it's attributed to, rather than a flag on a payout row.

Recovery happens inside payroll, on Confirm and Pay. The advance attributed to this deal is recovered first, then the oldest open advance. You see the per rep recovery before you commit, and what you saw is what commits. The payout rows stay gross, so the rep's statement shows the full commission and the deduction beside it, which is how you avoid the "why is my check short" conversation.

A rep with an open advance can't be marked paid any other way. The system refuses and points you at Confirm and Pay. And nobody can write off their own advance.

Clawbacks come out of the next payout, the same way

When a deal defaults or a funder claws back, the commission unwinds and the rep owes their share back. That used to be a worklist. Now it's collected from the rep's next payout the same way an advance is. Advances recover first, because house cash already handed over is the more exposed dollar, then clawbacks.

Two rules keep this honest. Only clawbacks on money the rep was actually paid auto-collect; a clawback on a payout FUNDesk never disbursed stays on the Collections worklist for a human, because deducting it would take real money for commission the rep never received. And a partial recovery stays pending with a smaller balance. A clawback only flips to collected at zero.

Edit it on either side

Deal info and payroll used to disagree. Edit the funded amount on the deal and payroll followed, but edit a payout in payroll and the split on the deal didn't move. Now every payroll amount writer syncs the split, so the deal shows the same number the rep is getting paid.

Zero percent to a rep and one hundred percent to the house is legal now, at funding and on edit. And zeroing an existing payout only happens when you submit that rep at zero in the funding dialog. A resync, a terms edit, or a cascade never moves a payout to zero on its own, because production had old zero percent rows sitting next to live payout dollars and I wasn't going to let a background job decide those.

Where it shows

Each rep sees their own cut, and only their own. Ask the chat what a rep gets paid this cycle and it answers after advances and clawbacks. It builds the statement PDFs too.
